Beaches - Litter Havens

We all love beaches, and quite often they are the cover story of any great vacation. There is, however, a reoccuring trend worldwide of these lovely coral rock, white sand, coconut lined beaches are being dotted with garbage. A recent (2009) movie, Addicted to Plastic, shows clearly how much plastic, among other debris, is floating around out there. Eventually it is due to either go down or up on shore.

Malaysia is home to some of the worlds finest of beaches. White sands and crushed coral/shells. These magnificent white coastlines line with lush green growth are picture perfect.

Unfortunately these beaches are covered with garbage in places. We were on a small island off of Pulau Tiomen snorkeling (the photo to the right) and actaully found an intact 4' fluorescent tube. Common garbage are plastic containers, fishing stuff (floats, nets etc.) and clothes/pieces of.
