Ali Shan Scenic Area

Train at Ali Mountain

Alishan is a scenic area in the central mountains of Taiwan. Due to it beiing far from the ocean, and at a high elevation it can get quite cold in winter, freezing is possible though not so common. The area comprises of many different things, including hotels, restaurants, souvenir shops, temples etc. But there is natural beauty and historical significance as well. This is one of the main tourist attractions in Taiwan, so peak seasons can get very busy. Don't even bother trying during Chinese New Year, you will spend a full day just driving there. "Snow days" are also incredibly busy, especially if it happens on a weekend.

Quick Facts

Getting There

What is there?

Large trees. A main draw are the large trees that can be found right at the heart of the area. From the parking lot past the toll booth, just walk through the gate and there are maps to point you in the right direction. There are also shuttle vans (not free) that will take you around, most only speak Mandarin and Taiwanese.

The paths go around the forest, stopping at some ponds, a temple/souvenir area, through the forest and to the train tracks where the famous large tree used to stand (it recently came down in a typhoon). The walkways are all raised wooden plant paths, stairs and bridges, very good quality paths and well maintained. But the area is not flat. Wheel chairs are not possible on the trails, but the roads throughout the park are ok. Along the paths are some large, old trees. All the big ones are numbered and have a sign in front of them introducing the tree. Outside the area there are also a few big trees by the road driving east.

Sunrise is another main attraction to the area. There are shuttles that leave early in the morning to head out to a good viewpoint over the mountains. On good days tehre will be low cloud and the scene will be simply outstanding. As of yet, we have not been lucky enough to get a good one.
