Taiwan's Mud Volcanoes

Taiwan is one of the few countries to have mud volcanoes. They are not often the typical cone type appearance, though in some countries they do have cone mud volcanoes, as does Taiwan. The more common type is more like a pool of bubbling mud. Some are more active than others, and at one location in Pingtung it errupts every few months.

Luo Shan Mud Volcanoes

Located on the eastern side of Taiwan, this area is said to have around 100 individual "volcanoes", or pools. Most are not marked and on private property. We found some, but were very hard to reach and is not really worth the effort. Most are quite small, around a meter in size, but the main one, located behind a pond which locals like to fish at, is probably about 10+ meters across.

The surrouding area is famous for its rice, and is well worth driving or walking around as the views are quite pretty. After you find the main mud volcano venture further along the road and look for spray paint on the road with arrows, to point you in the direction of a few more pools that are easy to find.
