Whistler, BC, Canada
Ahh, Whistler. It's a love/hate relationship. A double edged sword, no doubt. It started as a small area that hardcore skiing nuts would go to, now it is a massive resort town attracting millions of people. It boasts excellent skiing and snow sports in the winter, now also has world class mountain bike competitions and trails, superb hiking and much more! Sounds good, but it was at a cost. Although there are parts that remain untouched, it is very much not so in and around town. Hotels/condos and town centres are all over and LOTS of people year round. THe sad side of all this is that the localwildlife is not taken careofvery well, and many creatures that used to live there are being kicked out. Last time I went there in 2008 I was delighted to see a black bear walking up the road to our place to stay. A common sight in many places in BC. 3 days later i read in the paper it had being shot along with 2 others that week foreating garbage and hanging around construction sites. It all seems so wrong, but people tend not to complain. Let the drinking and good times roll. I personally a,m not going back for this lack of respect to nature, but i will admit Whistler has a lot to offer both the experienced olympic grade athletes, and the soccer mom in the way of outdoor activities. Whistler is also the host of the 2010 Winter Olympics, which has raised mixed feelings from residents, bt is a reality so enjoy it while it lasts.
