Places to avoid in Malaysia - For the Nature Lovers
Why Avoid these Places?
These places are best avoided not so much for safety while travelling, but because they attract people and make their money at the environments expense. Be it poaching (legal or not),wild harvesting, animal cruelty, polluting etc. Specific reasons why are given with each listing.
Cammeron Highlands - Although an incredibly beautiful place, the best word to describe its habitat is raped. It is a large agriculture area, which to be honest is quite beautiful and likely a must see in Malaysia. The problem is many nurseries there take plants, especially carnivorous species, from the wild to sell. The worst places to be avoided are the "butterfly gardens". These places often have many more creatures than butterflies; Including Praying mantis, spiders, snakes, lizards and other weird and wonderful creatures. These are all, at least that we were told about, wild caught and generally die in these VERY POORLY DESIGNED enclosures. I spent many years breeding and exchanging all sorts of critters, especially reptiles, amphibians and invertebrates and can say from experience these animals are housed incredibly poorly and is clear the keepers don't care muCh to change anything. We saW a number of dead invertebrates (granted many have short adult lives anyway) and many dead lizards, frogs and a few snakes...some of which are listed in CITES and other animal watch/protection programs.
