Travel Safety
Perhaps the biggest issue with traveling to new places is the topic of safety. Every nation, or region, has it's own pros and cons. Some places are very much a safe tourist spot, while otehrs may just be a disaster waiting to happen. Numerous things can hapen from all sort of human caused issues, natural disasters, diseases, accidents etc. Add on the fact that we are likely not too familiar with the new land which can make simple problems much more severe. As obvious as it sounds, and as often as we hear it, research and knowledge is our best prevention to problems when travelling. Below we will discuss some of the more likely scenarios one may run into while travelling. Diseases and PreventionThere are all kinds of diseases that can be caught in various. Some common senseand a little research goes a long way. Clearly, searching for what diseases may be found where your travelling will help. Here are some common sources for disease. * Insects/Arachnids: Mosquitoes, ticks, bed based bugs etc. * Swampy areas and stagnant water. Breeding grounds for all kinds of bacteria and disease carrying critters. * Food/water: Dirty or uncooked foods can be common places to get allkinds of gut parasites and disease. I have been hospitalized many times from food based problems. Avoid uncooked foods or places where garbage and other bug/rodent attracting things are found. * Rodents: They are everywhere, see if you can sneek a peek in the kitchen to see how bad it is. They are known to carry a couple nasty illnesses that can transmit to people. * Birds: With "Bird Flu" being a big scare to some, avoid infection hotspots with lots of chickens or other carrier birds. * Fungus: Various fungi can cause illness. Avoid dark dingy sleeping/eating aareas. Mould is a bad sign. Some are affected worse than others. Feet fungal attacks are common from hostel and similar showers. * The ground: Various things, especially worms, can be found below. Going bare foot is a good invitation to get various types of worms or insect larvae. * If it feels dirty, it probably is. Look around, use your senses, and trust your gut. Poisonous AnimalsBe aware of any poisonous, or otherwise dangerous animals, where your going. Try to find out the local words for things like spider, snake etc. Most localhospitals will at least have some knowledge of the local threats, and hopefully have book with pictures for you to ID. With snakes, try to remember the head shape, colour, patterns and general look. Did they sit and strike, or bite and run? Most poisonous animals bite from defense, so if we try not to intimidate them at all the risk is small. many bites/stings are from things like a spider in your shoe, handbag, pocket etc and the bite is unavoidable. Shaking things before putting them on is a simple and useful way to avoid problems. Human ThreatsBy far teh biggest threat to travellers are fellowhumans. Theives, rapists, drunks etc can all cause trouble. Best bet, especially for women, is to travvel with others. Avoid dark hidden areas or empty areas. tourist areas are targets for theives. Avoid showing off. Dont wear your wedding rings when you go to Cambodia. Common sense really. The contents of this website are All Copywrite of Kada's Garden.
