Description |
Size & Growth Habit |
Tabernaemontana divaricata is a multi branched evergreen shrub reaching 3-4 meters high, perhasp higher if let be in good conditions. These plants naturally form a more or less round bush shape and make great container and landscape plants.
|
Leaves |
Fairly large (5-12cm long), glossy, dark green leaves arranged opposite or sub-opposite on the stem. Leaves are evergreen.
|
Flowers |
Lovely scented, 5 petal white flowers are arranged in groups from the stems growing point. There is also another variety called "Flore Pleno" which is a double petal variety adn has more ruffled wavy petals and more of them. In our attempts, Tabernaemontana divaricata seems to be self sterile.
|
Cultivars & Hybrids |
Tabernaemontana divaricata "Flore Pleno" is a double flowered variety. It is teh same in all aspects to regular T. divaricata, except its double flowers.

Cultivation |
By Seed |
|
By Cutting |
Hardwood and semi-hardwood cuttings take pretty well. Cut a 10cm section and remove all but the upper leaves. Dip fresh cut stem in rooting hormone and place in a cutting soil in medium ligh tand high humidity. Roots usually form after 2-6 weeks. |
Soil |
|
Water |
Water when soil is dry. Once established, in ground, they can take some periods of no water as tehir roots are rather large. Potted plants may wilt after a couple days of being dry, and should be watered soon before leaf drop and death occur.
|
Feeding |
Plants that are growing in the ground probably dont need any fertilizers, although they will help make teh plant more lush. Flowering fertilizers will also improve the overal flower quantity. Potted plants shoul be fertilized a lower NPK fetilizer once a month in growing season.
|
Light |
Prefers medium sun, but will grow well in part shade to direct sun. Does not do well in dark situations.
|
Pruning |
Prune to take the form you wish. This is a fairly bushy shrub on its own, and pruning will often make it even more bushy.
|
Climate |
Prefers warm tropical and sub-tropical areas. Does not take frost, but can withstand temperatures down to 2C for short periods. Will grow in very dry or very humid condtions, so long as prolonged dry soil is avoided.
