Astrophytum asteriasSynonyms: Echinocactus asterias Flower: Yellow with red-orange throat. Reproduction: Self-sterile. Will not pollinate itself, needs 2 parent plants. Hybrids: Seems to hybridize fairly consistently with A. coahuilense and A. capricorne but doesn't seem to hybridize with A. myriostigma or A. ornatum. That is our experience, others may have had better luck. Rib form: Generally straight growing rather flat/globular. Ribs may be flat, indented or stick out slightly at the areoles. From above it has the appearance of a pie, each slice being a rib. There are almost always either 5, 8, or 11. There are specially bred cultivars with different rib counts, but most have 8 ribs. Areoles/Spines: Only very young plants show small spines, which often fall off and do not regrow. The areoles are generally white-grey but may be dirtied and be a yellow or brown colouration. Round shape usually under 1 cm in diameter but various cv's/forms are selectively bred for areole shape/size. Roots: Forms a fat tap root with fine roots growing off it. Max. size: maybe grow to 20 cm wide and 15 cm tall. These plants are very slow growing however and will take many years to attain such a massive size. Description: This is a fairly small slow growing specie from Mexico. It is an average-dark green, becoming lighter in colour when in full sun (may become yellow when "sun burned"). There are no spines on this cacti except when very young. On teh skin surface there are varying amounts of white scales. These scales have been selective bred in many kinds to form larger and patternd scales. The "normal" A. asterias is rather random then scattered over the the cactus skin. Notes: Some peyote call this cactus specie "peyote". Peyote is also the more commonly name used for Lophophora williamsii and has little relation to the Lophophora genus. |
